Local 25 Walkers out in full force at Greater Boston Walk Now for Autism Speaks at Suffolk Downs

It was a “sea of white” when the Teamsters Local 25 walk team took to the track at Suffolk Downs for the Greater Boston Autism Speaks walk on Sunday, October 2. More than 400 members and their families participated in the walk while Teamsters Local 25 defended their standing as the top fundraiser for the New England region of Autism Speaks, something we have held since 2007.

President Sean O’Brien joined WCVB TV’s Randy Price and WROR Radio’s Hank Morse to welcome the 25,000 participants to the walk. Our own Christopher Duffley – who many of you have seen perform at the Gala or IBT Convention – lead the countdown to the start of the walk before joining President O’Brien and members on the walk.

The Teamsters Local 25 walk team raised nearly $20,000! Thank you to everyone who contributed.

Teamsters Local 25 Lights up the Night for Third Annual Gala
Annual Event Donates $170,000 to Autism Charities

Teamsters’ brothers and sisters from near and far converged in Boston on April 10th for the third annual Light up the Night Gala to benefit the Teamsters Local 25 Autism Fund. Taking place for the second year at the Intercontinental Boston overlooking the waterfront, the ballroom was packed with more than 750 Teamsters’ members, friends, families and supporters for this Gala.

In the past three years, Teamsters Local 25 has raised a couple hundred thousand dollars for autism research and awareness. The goal of the evening was to bring attention to autism, while providing an entertaining and enjoyable evening for union brothers and sisters and their families and friends.

Shortly after doors opened at 8:00 p.m., the Kevin Barry Pipes and Drums band, based out of the Malden Irish American Club, kicked off the evening with a dramatic entrance and short musical selection. Veteran news anchor and ardent autism supporter, Randy Price, served as emcee for a speaking program that included Local 25 President Sean O’Brien, Massachusetts Lt. Governor Tim Murray, Autism Speaks’ President Mark Roithmayr, and a special video tribute.

The culmination of the evening included a video that introduced the Gala’s two honorees, Rita Gardner and Joe O’Connor.

Rita Gardner is the executive director of Melmark New England, a day and residential school in Andover, MA.  Joe O’Connor is a card carrying Teamsters Local 25 brother, and is the co-founder of the Braintree American Little League Challengers Division.
After the awards, the Kevin Barry Pipes & Drums closed out the official program and The Marsels again took to the stage to play for the rest of the evening. Guests had the chance to purchase raffle tickets for a 2010 Harley Davidson motorcycle or a Boston to Bermuda Cruise.

At the April 18th membership meeting, President Sean O’Brien presented donations to Melmark New England for $20,000 and Autism Speaks for $150,000.

Cheers for another successful event! Thank you to all who attended!

2009 Walk Now for Autism

TEAMSTERS LOCAL 25 JOINS AUTISM SPEAKS THIS YEAR FOR THE WALK ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2009 HELD AT SUFFOLK DOWNS

So many of us from Teamsters Local 25 braved the cold temperatures, strong wind and rain that day circling the racetrack for Autism Speaks Walk!  Even the weather did not get us Teamsters down. Through the generosity of everyone who donated, the walk was a tremendous success.  We as a Family and Team raised $17,000.00.  We were proud to have walked with our brothers & sisters and their families for Autism.  After the walk we enjoyed a family cookout down at the Tractor Trailer School.

We hope we are making a difference for all of the families that are touched by Autism, especially our own members.

Thank you again for your show of support with this constantly growing disorder.  We, at Local 25, have become an essential piece to the puzzle and due to your efforts, we can make a difference.

Please watch for further information on our “Gala For Autism” to be held on Saturday, April 10, 2010.

2008 Walk Now for Autism

The Autism Walk was held on Sunday, October 19, 2008 again at Suffolk Downs in East Boston..  Even though it was a brisk day, the turnout was amazing.  Our own Teamsters Local 25 Team had over 500 family and friends attending who walked sporting our blue shirts!  That day, we as a team, raised over $24,000.00.  After the walk, we had a great family day back at our new tractor trailer school.  We had moon slides, ice cream, popcorn, pumpkin decorating, baseball pitching and everyone was allowed to climb into our trucks! It was a great day enjoyed by all.

Local 25 would like to thank all of you for participating in this great event.

If you attended the walk, you know first hand how this disorder affects many families in our communities, including our own Brothers & Sisters.  In this uncertain economy we need to stick together now more than ever to make a difference and continue to do our part by raising funds to help ease the hardship many families coping with Autism face.

Please mark your calendars for our Second “Autism Gala” to be held on Saturday, March 28, 2009, at the Intercontinental Boston Hotel.
